Lake Forest Country Day School

In 2009 eight grade students studied the 1909 plan of architect, Daniel Burnham and created this mosaic of the Chicago skyline for  the 100 year anniversary.   They made tiles of important Chicago landmarks and Ferris wheel cars with iconographic imagery from their time at LFCDS.

The 8th grade graduating classes of 2007 and 2008 collaborated with the artist to create these mosaics as gifts for the school.

Students chose a compass design based on an ancient floor from Pompeii for the 2008 mosaic. The theme of the globe (with a star for the school's location) and compass represent the "Places We'll Go". The handmade bas relief tiles made by each student of something they fondly remembered about their time at LFCDS represent "the Places We've Been."

In 2007 students choose a tree as a metaphor for growth; the roots of the tree represent the past with highlights of the students’ school experiences while the branches reaching for the stars represent the future.

Cicada Closeup A highlight of the 2007 spring was the emergence of the 17 year cicada which was immortalized in tiles on the tree’s trunk.
